Once a small village, today one of the most attractive touristic spots in the world. While in 1996 the population of Playa del Carmen was only of 10,000 today in 2017 we achieve a population of 250,000. 

Last year airport traffic was 16,943,437 in whole year 2016 and in 2017 we have already accumulated 18,788,761. This shows how traffic is increasing drastically making Playa del Carmen one of the top places to invest in Mexico.

Playa del Carmen also offers an international and cosmopolitan population, with mainly American, Canadian, and European community of retired people, and as well and a South American people mainly from Argentina and Brasil.

Playa, as locals call this city, has many attractions to offer. From water sports like skiing, scuba diving, kite surfing, etc. As well as natural attractions such as turquoise blue waters, deep rich Jungle, beautiful weather throughout the year and not forget to mention the mitical archaeological sites, Mayan culture, amazing food and traditions the town has to offer.

Important events throughout the year like the Jazz Festival, food and Wine festivals, concerts and carnivals makes Playa del Carmen to have a relaxed  and modern atmosphere. 

Take a walk in our famous 5th avenue, you will learn a little bit of our culture and traditions, and you will be amazed of this place potential.

Surrounded with nature, we can also find beautiful and well planned theme parks all around the area like Xcaret, Xelha, etc. which are visited by tourists all year long.

Day trip to Cozumel

Next time you are in the Riviera Maya we advise you to take a day trip to Cozumel.

Cozumel is the 3rd largest island in México, with 647.33 km2, the size from north to south is 47 KM and 14.8 km from east to west. Population was around 80,000 people in 2010.

Cozumel was first populated by hunters and fishermen. In the VII Century Mayans used Cozumel as a strategic location for trading with Honduras and other countries of Latin America.

The island has a Sanctuary for the Goddess Ix Chel, who represents the moon, fertility and birth. Once a year there was a pilgrimage to Cozumel involving all the Mayan tribes, who gathered together and paddled in their boats to the island to offer tributes for the Goddess  Ix Chel.

Preferred destination by divers around the world, Cozumel is famous for its crystal clear waters, marine diversity and live reef barriers.

There is very low industry in the island that is why tourism is the most important economic activity.

Also host of the famous IRON MAN competition once per year. Cozumel receives a big amount of sport tourism from all around the globe.

We widely recommend you to take a tour to beach El Cielo (Heaven), one of the most attractive in the area that can only be reached by boat. In the bottom on the ground you will find endless starfish covering the white sands. Just mesmerizing!

We also encourage you to visit National Park Chankanaab. Where you can snorkel, and swim with the local fauna, and explore the sculptures and sank boats that were put there by the Navy to generate reef and attract fishes to the park.

Cozumel has an international airport, so you can flight directly. Other way to reach the island, are the ferry services from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel that leave every 30 minutes from parque fundadores.

Cenotes in Riviera Maya

Even though this region has a lot to offer when we speak about nature, one of the things that capture most people when they visit for the first time the Riviera Maya are the Cenotes.

Cenotes are underground rivers, which carry the water collected from the rain. Then this water is conducted through these rivers directly to the ocean. When you snorkel or swim in Playa del Carmen beaches and other places of the Riviera Maya, you can find this water springs around the rocks and reefs with clear, cold and fresh water coming from the cenotes which are feeding the ocean. When this happens an effect like the mix of oil and water is formed called adocline effect.

There are different types of cenotes: Open Cenotes (like a pool surrounded by plants and nature), semi-open ( Mainly caverns), closed Cenotes (caves ), and deep cenotes (More than 30 meters in depth).

65 million years ago, a 10 km diameter meteorite impacted the Yucatan Peninsula. It is believed that this event at Chicxulub caused the extinction of 75% of the living species of the planet.

Diverse studies show that this meteorite impacted the earth at 72,000 KM/h, this generated temperatures up to 18,000 degrees Celsius and caused the same force equal to 100 million of megatons of TNT.

I am telling you this, as I want you to understand that the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula was once below the ocean. And when this meteorite hit in Yucatan, caused the immersion of the Yucatan Península. All our ground used to be reef barriers.

As the Yucatan Peninsula emerges from the ocean after the hit, plus the combination of the high temperatures caused that our ground came out totally flat, and without any mountains as everything was pulverised.  All our ground and floor was made of lime stone.

Riviera Maya

This is very important when I speak of cenotes, as all the water from the rain is filtered making the water crystal clear. Then it is conducted through underground rivers all the way until meets the ocean.

Beautiful formations and mystic places are found in these amazing rivers. Scuba divers also like to explore these unknown places.

We fully recommend you to go out there and swim in one of these beauties yourself.
